Struggle

I’ve got files of ‘poetry’ (I don’t like the word, it makes me cringe) stored separate files for each month. I’ve been posting a lot of ‘poetry’ from previous months. I haven’t posted any of June’s poetry yet. But here is one I wrote tonight, because this is just the place I’m in right now

Got these thoughts milling around my head
Some are unreasonable
Unfashionable
Irrational
But they are the current
That drowns me with dread
Trying to keep myself looking ahead
But the uncertainty of simple things
Others take for granted has me led
To the darkest thoughts
That entangle me in this web
Trying to think that I just take each day
Because every moment is uncertain
And come what may
It might be goodbye
To the things that help me stay
But the absence of clarity
Makes me want to stray
Lean into the abyss
And take the wheel, pull the breaks on this
Seeking my chance to be dismissed

The good, the badass, the ugly

I’m going to space
With Jack
And his mate Mack
We’ll be space cowboys
Running rogue among the stars

Jack will bring his wife
Honey is such a laugh
And Mack will bring his knife
And we’ll scour the stars
For game, unicorns and dragons
On the moon or failing that L.A
Who can tell the difference anyway?
When you’re all drugged up
On scandal
Revealed in photographs
We took in Santa Monica bay!

And we’ll swing among the stars
Get our names in the lights
We’ll swing from Jupiter to mars
Just like Frank Sinatra sang!

We’ll be the rogue space cowboys
the good, that’s Jack
The badass, that’s Mack
the ugly? That’s Matt! (me)

Heart First

I’ve been romancing honey
Jacks tennesee gal
I shouldn’t do
Not with this checkered heart of mine

Jack knows my heart
He’s a friend like that
Says I need a change of clothes
My heart looks like a lesbian
In these checkered rags

So i’ve suited up this old heart
Tie an all, cover the bullet hole
Thats what I tell ’em anyway
“I surived the bullet, ma’am
I’m tough and ‘ard me, like!”

I don’t tell them I
Fell heart first
Over heels

I love Jack

I’ve been on the whiskey again
Gone to tennessee
See my friend
Jack is always at the docks
And we talk of chicks and rock

Like the fluffiness of a few day old chicken
Freshly hatched
And everyones already finger lickin’!
And the rocks on the pennines
Way back yonder
Where I come from

Velvety smooth
Down the hatch
I love Jack

Corduroy trousers

Corduroy trousers
Always sound like
they’re about to set fire
as old men shuffle
through their retirement
Taking the time
to refine their temperament
So the wife
Will wind ‘er neck in
Stop naggin’
For all the gamblin’

Now he has learnt the humour
In tryin’ to outdo her
And he pulls faces
Through shop windows!
Bets on the side for another pack ’o cigarettes
And when she turns back round
He smiles and points out her assets
His smile feigning innocence

And at the weekends
She goes to their usual haunts
The ladies book club
Where she can moan
About his nuisances
But with a lingering smile
Upon her lips
With an affectionate humour
Because she knows
She is his.

The rainbow forgot

I am all the colours the rainbow forgot
Grey, black and teal
I am the have nots

And I was born
Grey bubble gum
No one knew
Of the thoughts
I’d provoke them to chew

And I was born
Teal cigarettes
The signs were in the smoke
They couldn’t forget

And I fell into
A pot of black paint
At a young age
They called it Matt black
Who’d have thought it
Think about it, what’s my name?

I am the colours the rainbow forgot
I am the have nots
