Mothmen spread their wings
the wild in us felt the breath of them
Lollipops muddied where we left
blueberry gasps
rushed from blue tongues
corn syrup unhinged us
sugarcane legs
our boots tracked sepia
fabric conditioned into terror
monsters had plagued the washin’ line
Authors note:
I have no idea what I’m doing.

Ha ha! None of us know what we’re doing, we just write. And I love this poem. What remains – playtime stains and sepia memories.

Matt, “sugarcane legs / our boots tracked sepia” really gets me—the way those lines feel both playful and foreboding hits just right. This whole piece buzzes with chaotic nostalgia and eerie wonder!

Matt, this places me in a vivid, sensory-rich world where the fantastical and the mundane intertwine. The surreal imagery and evocative language captures a sense of youthful abandon with the eerie undercurrents of childhood experiences.

Love this evocation of memories and the images. ‘monsters had plagued the washin’ line’ – this took me back to my childhood back-garden.

Thanks. Yea, when you’re a kid and watch a scary film (you shouldn’t have been watching) then go out till is getting somewhat dark in the summer and the wind ruffles the laundry and your child imagination runs riot..

Haha– I appreciate the author’s note. I think most of us are just trying our best; I usually don’t know what I’m doing with poetry, but I try. 😁 You have a lot of vibrant images here– lovely poem.
