I think, men in general, want to appeal to women. And I think there is a certain societal push to define what masculinity is. Granted, I’m no expert, since I am a male that tends to exhibit both stereotypical masculinity and stereotypical femininity.

Yes, a large part of is certainly to appeal to women. I know I have done it. I gave up trying to appeal to women in that way, because it doesn’t work in the long term. It’s a short term solution to a long term problem. That being that it appeals to women only for so long, of course you could say that is the case with anything. It only appeals for so long, but this especially. As the guy who is emoting in a way approved, purposely shedding his masculinity to ironically prove his masculinity is appealing to a functional evolutionary trait, a so called more ‘sensitive’ man, can in their minds nurture and protect (depending on the type of the protection they feel they currently need).

There is also the misconception that masculinity itself puts men in a cage. Ironically men end up in cage, but it isn’t their masculinity that put them in there, it is the worlds fear of masculinity that puts them in there. We have it all back to front. It isn’t masculinity that cages a man, it’s the fear of masculinity that cages him.

I think that is a completely valid point.
Fear is a destructive motivation for a lot of things.

The fear of masculine emotion, makes people strip men bare and tries to dress them in a more feminine way of emoting. If a man cries, rather than seeing a man crying, people see someone who has stripped away his masculinity for a moment of feeling. When for a man to cry, he doesn’t need to strip his masculinity because feelings are part of being a man. It’s not recognising that feelings are part of being a man, that when a man does express them by crying, he isn’t purposely dropping masculinity, there is masculinity in his tears. People wish to strip that away from him. People don’t want to think men can still be men and emote in a visible way, it takes the purity away from emotions. Because no one thinks of men as pure, but we think of women as pure. Women cry, women emote, emotions are pure, feminine is pure etc.
